When it comes to finding balance in life, one person automatically comes to mind, my good friend Myra Hollis.
Myra is currently obtaining her B.S. in Psychology and is the founder of Fem Scholar. Fem Scholar is an organization that, “Works to ensure the success of young women from backgrounds where achieving success through education seems impossible.”
Myra was nice enough to share how she balances life, and more.
Q: What inspired you to start Fem Scholar?
I come from a neighborhood where not many people go to college and I saw that this program was necessary. I always told myself that I would be a helping hand in my community once I became established in my career. But I live by a saying for myself, ” why wait to complete a goal/ plan when you can do it now” After thinking over everything thoroughly after I had the idea I just took off with it.
Q: How do you balance going to school and running Fem Scholar?
Running Fem Scholar is like a part time job. My Best friend Terri has been a big helping hand, she was the one who I first shared my vision with in the beginning and has been apart of my vision since that day. She isn’t afraid to tell me where I went wrong or what I need to work on and I greatly appreciate her for that. I also have my good friend Yazzmyn who steps in whenever she sees I need the help. I’m lucky that Fem scholar is ran like a family so I have help coming from all of the girls.
Q: What has been the hardiest part about being the founder of Fem Scholar?
Making sure that I run Fem scholar as a business but also still have a personality and still be myself has been one of the hardest parts. It’s great forming a sister like relationship with the girls but I still want them to respect me ( as they do) and still get work done.
Q: What motivates you to keep going after your goals?
I’m lucky that I have a strong group of supporters in my corner. My friends refuse to let me give up and are always asking in what ways can they help me with my different goals. My mom and dad are always steadily motivating me. Having all these people behind me makes me want to never give up and always strive for even better.
Q: If you could tell your younger self one thing, What would it be?
If I could tell myself one thing it would be I’m proud of you, everything you are doing is worth it.
So many of us try to juggle everything by ourselves. Myra is a perfect example that, true balance comes with allowing others to help us.
Many feel that it’s a sign of weakness to ask for help, but in actuality it’s a sign of growth.
So, the next time you find yourself feeling overwhelmed, ask a close friend for help. And vice versa, you see a friend in need, help them out.
Imagine how well we could all balance life, if we allowed others to help & support us.
