  • 5 Habits to Create a Better You

Our wants in life can change over time, but it’s our habits that can make us or break us. Even when we don’t know what career path we want to take, our habits can still build us up. Having good habits not only improves us but it prepares us for our future. As Benjamin Franklin states “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.”

We can be very strategic. We can be mentally, physically and emotionally prepared before knowing our master plan.

Here are 5 habits to help create a better you!

    1. Timeliness. Here is a little trick to help you be on time. “To be early is to be on time, to be on time is to be late, to be late is unacceptable.” Also setting your clocks ahead of time helps too.

    2. Consistency. Pick something and choose to be consistent. The gym, reading books, journaling. Pick something that would preferably benefit you in a positive way and be consistent at it.

    3. Meditation. Start each day with a clean mind. Meditation is know to be a very powerful habit that can mentally strength you in many ways.

    4. Daily Affirmations. Create the habit of telling encouraging phrases to yourself.

    5. Self care. Get in the habit of making sure your health is good. Getting 7-8 hrs of sleep. Shower daily. Clean hair, nails and feet. Healthy food in take.

Today’s article was inspired by Myleik Teele, the owner of Curl Box. Myleik recently tweeted, “It’s OK if you don’t have a 2018 master plan today. Dedicate yourself to better habits. Be early. Be consistent. Do your best when you feel your worst. Read some more. Make more mistakes. Habits over acts.”

Myleik tweet inspired me to expand on how we can use our habits to better ourselves. Thank you Myleik for inspiring me, and I hope this article inspires you!

  • Reshape Your Thoughts – Give Yourself a Second Chance

Time after time its easy to find ourselves giving others a second chance. A second chance at love or a second chance at friendship, etc. We give and we give and we give. But when we need to give ourselves a second chance,… we doubt, we over think or we’re hesitant.

Today I want to remind you that you deserve a second chance. Its time to reshape our thoughts, write down the pros and cons and find a new way to our goals. You are not the outcome of your plans, you are the character of the actions that it took you to build your plan. Actions build character that is required to properly execute ideas.

Giving ourselves a second chance is a life long assignment. We will never stop needing a second chance. Its important to know that life is always opening and closing doors, therefore second chances are a constant requirement that we must give to ourselves.

If we choose not to give ourselves a second chance then we are giving up on life. Giving into the belief that we are not capable of making or dreams come true. We can’t allow giving up to be an option. We are more than capable of making our dreams come true.

Here are a few actions I take to reshape my thoughts and how I give myself a second chance.

    Take a break.
    – An overworked mind will never create the best results. Walk away for a few days and allow your thoughts to regroup.

    Acknowledge what went wrong.
    – What could you have done better, what needed more preparation?

    Research other options.
    – Research will always be our best friend. Look into ways to take a different direction.

Take a look at other peoples blueprint.
    – Everyone has a blueprint. Look at how others achieved what you want and see if their tools work for you.

    Acknowledge what went right.
    – Don’t let the bad outweigh the good. Make sure to keep the good up and use whats working to your benefit.

These actions build my confidence back up and allow me to give myself a second chance.

Nobody is expected to be perfect. Nobody is expected to get it right on the first try, second try or even 20th try. But if you never give up, then you can never fail.

The journey to success will always and forever be the best part, so enjoy the road your on and never give up on yourself!

I hope that sharing my experiences and sharing your experiences that we both grow to reach our full potential!

  • Lead in Courage or Run in Fear feat Ryan McMurray

Do you ever just want to try something new? Is there an idea that you’ve had and you cant seem to shake it? Before you know it, your up late at night planning out the details, and researching the options. Then it hits, can you realllllly do this? Self doubt starts growing and growing, and before you know it this idea is a thing of the past.

Giving a new journey a try can be exciting to some and frightening to others. It takes courage to leap out on faith and start something new. It really doesn’t matter if one feels excited or nervous, because at the end of the day making an idea come alive takes faith. Faith that it will be worth your time, faith that your plan will lead you in the right direction, as well as, awareness that of it doesn’t work out it doesn’t mean you have to quit. We can continue to try as many times as we want to make our dreams come true.

The line of going for it or running away from it happens in seconds, made by one decision. A simple thought that leads with courage or runs in fear.

When it comes to taking a chance on ones idea, I thought id reach out to someone who recently had the make such a big decision.

Today I introduce to you Ryan McMurray, he recently made the decision to move forward with starting a company called Gymspiration which is a comprehensive fitness evaluation program for amateur athletes. I had the opportunity to ask him a few questions to get an idea of how he was able to take that leap of faith and turn his idea into a business.

    How do you define Gymspiration?
I’m positioning Gymspiration as a society for individuals devoted to fitness/wellness. I want people that engage me for services to feel like a part of a group who are interested in seeing each other improve.

What was the final straw that made you open Gymspiration?
No single epiphany I can point to. Just the daily grind at somebody else’s company wearing on me. I’ve been at my day job for 10+ years doing something I’m not truly interested in. There are things that I enjoy about my work but I wouldn’t be doing it for free. I like helping people set, reach, and surpass their goals and I l enjoy the fitness industry. The hope is that Gymspiration will eventually allow me to focus on that full time.

How do you maximize your time to incorporate Gymspiration?
At this point, I don’t do a very good job of it. I have the luxury of not needing profit right away and I built Gymspiration to be a long term side business with low ongoing overhead. All of my investment was upfront; equipment, web design, graphic design, merchandising, etc. Work/Life balance is of the utmost importance to me so I try not to let many things stress me out. At this point, while I still hold a 9-5 job, I’m just trying to meet people, establish a presence, and gain experience.

What has been the pros and cons of taking your idea to the next level?
It is a source of pride but comes with a lot of work and pressure.

What have you learned about yourself at this early stage of building your idea?
    I love branding and merchandising.

Is there anything you could have done better before taking the jump to start Gymspiration?
The only thing I could do is drastically change my life by quitting my full time job and committing 100% to Gymspiration. I’m have a hard time mentally justifying that until I start to see some sort of consistent $$ coming in.

What advice do you have for others that are thinking about taking the jump to start there our business?
Make a plan, stick to timelines, be realistic.

What are you hoping Gymspiration can accomplish?
Fantastic question that I don’t really know I ever considered. I suppose for me it is a means to live a bit more on my own terms. For others, I want Gymspiration to be a motivation to push towards their greatest self. Ultimate long goal would be to have an actual fitness/sport facility that can host league play and/or team practice.

There is so many of us that are doing the daily grind, I hope Ryan can be an example that you too can go for it!

  • Sip and Dream Inc – Summer Soiree

How do we stay motivated? This is a question I often receive. The truth is motivation is a lifestyle. The books  we read, the shows we watch and the events that we attend all effect how motivated we can be.

At least once a month it’s important to attend an event that’s sole purpose is to encourage, inspire and motivate others.

This past weekend I attended the Summer Soiree event by Sip and Dream Inc, and not only was it encouraging, inspiring and motivating, but they also gave tools and recommendations on business, branding & life.

The founder of Sip and Dream, Chiana Jenell, started the networking event as a hobby that has now turned into a “full-blown company producing empowerment, business, and networking events throughout Los Angeles.” Chiana states that her goal is to help as many people as she can bring their dreams to life. It was very obvious in Chiana’s mannerism that she cared deeply about the woman attending the event by greeting every guest and openly conversing with everyone. She created an authentic safe place for everyone to be themselves.

The event started with painting powerful messages on pink canvasses from Baby Ink Bizz, which was something I was really looking forward to doing. You can see my drawing below, don’t judge me, I tried. Lol

Next, we had an ice breaker opportunity where we got out of our seats and walked around the area and introduced ourselves to each other. It was nice to get to say hi to each individual personally with an added hug or hand shake. From there we did formal introductions where we stood up, said our names, and shared the type of industry we work in.

Then the really good stuff started!!! The two guest speakers were Nichole Lynel & Austin Belisle.

Nichole Lynel is a mogul in the making; she can take her idea and bring it to life. Nichole is mostly known as one of the owners of House of Chic, an online clothing boutique, but she has now added many titles to her name, which include; a motivational speaker, clothing designer and consultant to many young girls around the world.

But it wasn’t always that way, at the Sip and Dream event Nichole shared that when she was 30 years old as a cocktail waitress she made the decision. A decision that she knew that one day she was going to have to make. She quit her job as a waitress and went after her true passion which is fashion. The first year the online boutique, House of Chic made a million dollars. Nichole shared that what lead to the store to have major success was “Amazing content consistently.” She recommends using social media has a driving force for ones business. Stating that we can use social media to tell a story that can increase others engagement into our business.

Nichole was very relatable and honest with her business experiences. I found her honesty to not only be inspiring, but motivated me to take her advice. Nichole has proven that if we put consistent actions behind our ideas then we too can achieve success.

Austin Belisle, who I have named as “The Game Changer,” is a graphic/web designer and creative director for one of the top design agencies in the world, Verge Collective. He specializes in helping establish businesses and start-ups with the purpose of bringing their vision to life. Austin also started his own design agency specifically to help smaller business look more professional.

I had the opportunity to seat down with Austin and go more in depth about the tools his agency provides. When it comes to designing ones brand, Austin states that we should have a clear view of who our consumer is. That we should know exactly who our client is so that we can specifically design with the client in mind. With the need for consistency on social media, Austin also provides visuals for his clients for the whole month, which allows that client to publish consistent content online.

When it comes to growing your brand, Austin recommended taking a competitive analysis of your competition, obtaining feedback from the consumer and to be completely emerged into your industry. Following theses tips allows one to stay on track for creating the best fit visuals for the brand and the client.

Austin perspective on branding was very refreshing and easy to adapt to. I found his suggestions to make me think deeper into the visuals that my business provides and how I too can use visuals to connect with my clients.

One of my favorite parts about the Sip and Dream event was that it was designed to be a more intimate event. There wasn’t an overwhelming amount of people which really allowed the guest to connect and network without feeling pressured to meet a lot of people. The guests were open about the different struggles which really allowed all of us to learn a variety of solutions to business struggles.

I can’t wait to go to the next Sip and Dream event!!!!

  • New Roads, Same Purpose – Intuition.LA Featuring Alexandria Greenwood

Are you on the cusp of giving your dream another try?

If that’s you, then you are at the right place at the right time! Last year Alexandria Greenwood shared with us how she was giving her dream another try, and today we have the opportunity to follow up with her on how it’s going.

Alexandria Greenwood is the owner of Intuition.LA, an online clothing and accessory boutique. A year ago when we spoke to Alexandria Greenwood she had just opened her online boutique, today she is preparing to expand her store into the South Bay Galleria mall in California!

Ms. Greenwood has been very transparent on her journey to get to this moment in life. She has overcome financial difficulties, became a philanthropist, learned how to juggle her time, and was very patient.

All along Alexandria knew that owning a boutique was part of her purpose, and today we get another inside look at the lessons she has learned by giving her dream another try.

What has made the biggest difference with your current store compared to your previous online store and why?

Well, I still have the both but the biggest change has been to having to be somewhere daily. I was so free before, it’s scary because even when I had my job I never had times to be there. So that was the biggest change.

What made you want to open a store front and why?

I just out grew my home. There was too much!

How has chasing your dream affected your perspective on life?

That literally anything can happen if you pray and work your ass off!

What has been the biggest lesson you had to learn since starting Intuition.LA?

How to forgive or not take things so personal. I don’t trust, or forgive easy. In business you have to do both. I am growing through that, which can be hard. I pray. I literally have to focus everyday to let things go. It’s so hard for me, it’s a daily exercise. It’s a daily thing for me. My entire life is personal, I’m passionate and everything I do is purposeful. So this is sooooo new.

How did philanthropy start to play a role with Intuition.LA and why?

From day one I gave 10% away to small businesses started by black women. I guess the more you make the more you can give. I love to give it makes me feel connected to the struggle, and the solution.

How have you seen your life change since you started to choose to be more philanthropic?

I have been giving to charities since I was 19 years old at Nordstrom, I give to 3 charities on a regular basis. I give all the time. When I’m happy, when I’m mad. In the drive thru I pay for the car behind me. I think it’s allowed me to live in a space of gratitude and it’s blessed me and this business.

What advice would you give for anyone that is still thinking about giving their dream another try?

Be ready to work. If you are not ready to work. Stop now.

Any final thoughts or recommendation you want to share?

It’s ok to work for others to help build others dream. That may be where you are able to grow. This is a big time for the girl boss. But this too shall pass, get to know what you want beyond the hashtag!!

I hope that through Alexandria sharing her experiences that you too will give your dream another chance!

  • “Why Not You” A 31 Day Empowerment Guide – Book Review

Have you ever found yourself stuck in a rut? Where days turn into weeks and weeks turn into months and before you know it, none of your goals are completed. Lets be honest, we have all been there. Life just keeps moving and going and we are lost in the moment and forget the big picture.

In these moments its nice to find something that we can go to, to motivate and inspire us to get back on track. This past July I needed some encouragement and decided to try out a guide by K. Amelia called “Why Not You” A 31 day empowerment guide.

Each day in July I started my morning reading the guide, and each day I became more and more confident in who I am and what I am trying to achieve in life. I particularly loved that there was a specific focus for each week. For Example; Week 1 focused on, “Overcoming Resistance & Doubt.”

Each day within the week carried on the theme of the week by giving tools and reminders to empower the reader. I found the focus of each day to be relatable in the sense that the book was providing encouragement to change my thought process without being too over bearing.

My biggest pet peev with motivation books is that they can feel like they are talking down to you or assuming your situation. K. Amelia was able to play on the fine line of empowering and not judging in the guide.

My favorite week was week 3: Acceptance & Integration, I loved the week so much that I must share each days focus with you!

    Day 15: I have a clear mind
Day 16: I strive to be the best I can be
    Day 17: I have Purpose
Day 18: I am proud of everything I am
    Day 19: I accept who I am
    Day 20: I love myself
Day 21: I have unlimited possibilities
With each focus of the day, K. Amelia gives us tools and reasons why and how we can integrate the daily focus into our own lives. For example, here is an expert from Day 15: I have a clear mind:

“Although it may seem like we are bombarded with life’s burden we can set time aside to clear our mind. In the similar way that we take a day out the week or weekend to clean our homes, cars, and garages; we can take time to escape from our thoughts. You realize just as soon as you’ve cleaned your car or home that you have great relief and you feel a sense of freedom. The sooner we decide to get rid of clutter, the freer we are.”

    K. Amelia ability to not only encourage but give examples and reminders is the real glue that brings one the feeling of empowerment. With each day I could feel her rooting for me and wanting the best for me. There was an authentic connection and gradual growth within the guide that made it not only easy to stick to, but also a very smooth read.

I personally recommend this guide to anyone that needs that extra boost to get back on track!

The guide is now available on amazon!

Here is the link to get your copy today: “Why Not You”  An Empowerment Guide

The guide helped me in so many ways and I look forward to hearing how it has empowered your life!
